The HANDS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) IRS recognized charity that provides some unique services to the nearly 2.5 million citizens of Illinois with disabilities.  The Foundation is in essence a tri-program agency that operates throughout the State of Illinois.  Our Permanent Loan Project established in 1985 has provided used adaptive devices ranging from Hospital Beds, wheelchairs, reading machines for low vision clients, to standing racks, electric carts and wheelchairs for those mobility impaired clients.  This equipment is loaned at no cost for however long it is needed to individuals.

Our Homes for Dinosaurs Computer Recycling program offers used older technology to the disabled throughout the State of Illinois.  In 2001 644 computers were refurbished and reallocated to those applicants who apply to our program for equipment.  Every effort is made to match equipment with the individual needs as assessed by our staff.  Needless to say this is a very popular program and the average wait time for applicantions to be honored is usually 1 to 2 years.

Our Community Advocacy Program provides assistance to students and parents of students with disabilities in their effort to achieve a quality education.  This advocacy program provides people to assist students and their parents in all aspects of educational goals.

All services provided through the HANDS Foundation is without charge.  A core of volunteers provide this service as a way of assisting others in their quest to become part of our overall society.

Our Mission Statement

Our mission is simply to assist our fellow brothers and sisters who are disabled actively reenter into Illinois society.  Whether it be through the loan of equipment that provides the ability to live independently, the provision of a computer to develop work skills necessary to reenter the workforce; or simply through our Advocacy program, all our efforts are aimed at making Independence a reality for the citizens with disabilities.
